Marc Overbeck in Times of Israel: A Call to American Jews on Israel, Values, Pride and Responsibility

Editor’s note: Marc Overbeck has been a member of Reconstructing Judaism’s Board of Governors since October 2020 and twice served as president of Temple Beth Sholom in Salem, Oregon. In this piece, recently published on The Blogs at the Times of Israel, Marc writes as a Diaspora Jew wrestling honestly with his support for Israel in the wake of October 7 and its aftermath. Drawing on Torah, covenant and the founding ideals of Zionism, he calls on American Jews to hold fast to the values of justice, lovingkindness, and democratic life — even when, especially when, that means speaking critically of the current Israeli government. His is a voice of pride and responsibility, not despair. You can read the full piece here.
