Choosing Life: The Spiritual Challenge of Climate Crisis and Environmental Racism

Thursday, March 23, 2023 - 2:00 pm EDT

Join us for a real-time web conversation on Thursday, March 23, at 2 p.m. with Rabbi Julie Greenberg, based on her Evolve essay, “Choosing Life: The Spiritual Challenge of Climate Crisis and Environmental Racism.

Rabbi Greenberg, director of the Climate Justice and Jobs program for POWER Interfaith, presents an immediate challenge: The residents of neighborhoods with large numbers of people of color have radically shorter life expectancies and much higher rates of asthma, heart and lung disease, and diabetes. Changing this reality is also an important part of climate activism.

There is no charge to register for an Evolve web conversation.

About Evolve
Evolve: Groundbreaking Jewish Conversations is an initiative of Reconstructing Judaism. We seek to promote the ongoing evolution of the Jewish community by launching collective, communal conversations about the urgent issues of our day. To that end, Evolve brings multiple voices together to listen to one another’s point of view and to interact respectfully. In an era when it has become ever more difficult to remain open to viewpoints that differ from our own, Evolve cultivates covenantal conversations even when we disagree. In this way, we hope to enhance the ongoing evolution of Jewish civilization.

Evolve does not endorse every viewpoint presented on its platform. Its goal is to cultivate groundbreaking, constructive, respectful conversations about urgent issues of concern. Evolve makes space for a wide range of viewpoints and seeks to support constructive debate while abiding by the values of tzelem Elohim (regarding and treating all people as created in the divine image), kavod (respect), redifat shalom (pursuing peace) and makhloket leshem shamayim (disagreements for the sake of heaven).

Reconstructing Judaism is committed to offering an accessible space to our community members. We commit to:

  1. Providing participants with all the session materials ahead of time
  2. Providing automated captions on all live sessions
  3. Providing subtitles for all recorded sessions
  4. Using the chat function and read it aloud during the sessions
  5. Asking for participant accessibility needs and doing our best to accommodate them. Please feel welcome to contact us at RForth@ReconstructingJudaism.org.
