Rabbi Alpert explains that even though Reconstructionists say that belonging is primary—prior to behaving or believing, and even though the founder of Reconstructionism, Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan, was an early and enthusiastic Zionist, it is possible in our day to be a Reconstructionist without being a Zionist.
