Why does the World Zionist Congress matter? It plays a powerful role in shaping Jewish life around the world. By allocating more than $5 billion in global Jewish resources, it influences everything from education to religious life to what gets built – and more importantly, where.
This week, Rabbi Deborah Waxman, Ph.D., is in Jerusalem taking part in the 39th World Zionist Congress as a delegate of the progressive Hatikvah Slate. She is advocating for funding that supports democracy, religious pluralism, women’s and LGBTQ+ equality, and an end to the occupation.
Rabbi Waxman joined “Word on the Street Live” with J Street founder Jeremy Ben-Ami and Rabbi Jill Jacobs, CEO of T’ruah, to offer insight into the inner workings of the World Zionist Congress and to discuss the Reconstructionist values driving the Hatikvah Slate.
Shortly after recording this conversation, the Hatikvah Slate successfully passed a resolution preventing World Zionist Organization funds from supporting settlement activity in Gaza. This was a major victory!
